What is BEL? The Benchmark Enrichment Learning Program provides supplemental reading support to selected students in kindergarten through fifth grade. A certificated teacher provides research-based strategies to small groups of students to increase reading skills. The primary curriculum is the Reading Explorers program. How do students qualify for BEL? There is new criteria being used this year to determine BEL eligibility. Students eligibility is now based on a total score obtained from the following: · Screening for phonological awareness and letter sounds in Kindergarten · Reading Report Card Scores · Stanford Test Scores · Teacher Recommendation · WASL scores for 4th and 5th grades · Students with a Reading IEP (individualized Educational Plan) are not eligible · English Language Learning students must score a 2 or higher on the Washington Language Assessment in order to be eligible for BEL
