What curriculum is used in Reading Club?

Reading Club is an extension of the classroom reading program.  For this reason, we use a separate curriculum from your child's regular classroom.  Our curriculum is called Reading Explorers.  There are three main parts to this program; Start Up Phonics, Trailblazers, and Pathfinders.  We will be using the Start Up Phonics with Kindergarten and first grade Students. First through third grade students will use the Trailblazers program.  Forth and Fifth grade students will use the Pathfinders program.

Start Up Phonics:

· Build a foundation for successful phonemic awareness and phonics instruction

· Explicitly teach short vowels and consonants

· Support and motivate all learners

Pathtfinders and Trailblazers:

Both of these programs are research based and provide structure and materials to support young readers and writers.  Struggling readers will have the opportunity to build literacy skills through reading, writing, and word work activities. Students will work with developmentally appropriate fiction and non-fiction books.  Lessons consist of four parts; reading warm-up, reading, word works, and writing.  The lessons are book specific and stress good comprehension skills, as well as oral and written communication skills.
