Reading Reading Homwork

The McGraw Hill series was chosen by the Issaquah School District as the reading program for all Issaquah schools.  With this program, the children read material as a whole group, as well as books selected at their instructional level.  They receive guided reading instruction in small groups and develop reading response skills that demonstrate comprehension.  Reading instruction will emphasize phonics, sight words, and comprehension.

Every child must receive reading practice at home.  Students should be performing three reading jobs per night, reading to someone, someone reading to them, and independent reading.  These reading jobs are shown to improve a students reading performance.

Math

Everyday Mathematics is a rigorous PreK-6 curriculum used across the country.  It is scientifically research-based and proven to build students' mathematical knowledge from the basics to higher-order thinking and critical problem solving.

Writing

Writing is a daily activity and also an important part of the McGraw Hill series.  As a school we use the Four Square Writing Method.

Homework

Your child will be receiving a list of spelling words for the following Friday test. The list consists of ten words with a list of optional challenge words. The words are part of the entire reading curriculum and are reviewed through the week in reading. The words are consistent to the phonics taught through the week. However, review at home is essential. Your child will only benefit from early review.

Every week with homework, your child will receive a black and white paper copy of a book we will be reading in class. Preview and review of the book will help support reading skills in school. This book will be at grade level reading. It may be too hard for some and too easy for others. This book is sent home for you as the parent or guardian to use at your discretion. Also, it is a good marker to use for judging how well your child is doing in first grade reading. I encourage you to help your child keep the books in a safe place at home to "revisit" through the year.

A math homework sheet will be sent which correlates with our unit in the adopted series called "Trailblazers". The activities are based on the area of study in class.
