Briarwood Events and Important Notes

To Briarwood Parents:

School Events

Item 1: Thank You to Our PTA From the Briarwood Staff: Thank you, so much, for the

wonderful meals you have provided throughout the year and most recently for our Staff

Appreciation Week extravaganza. Thank you to all of the parents who donated food and gave

gifts to our teachers. You are such an amazing, thoughtful group. We appreciate you so much!

Item 2: Bus Passes: The last day for bus passes is Thursday, June 5.

Item 3: Spirit Day: Wear something from the past this Friday, June 6 for our Spirit Day!

Item 4: Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough Pick-Up: Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough will be

delivered on Friday, June 6 and will be available for pick-up between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm in

the multi-purpose room. The dough is a frozen and perishable product; if you are

unavailable to pick up your order during that time, please make arrangements for

someone to do it for you. We are unable to store your order. If your child (except for AM

kindergarteners) ordered one or two containers, the cookie dough will be delivered to your

child’s classroom and can be taken home on the bus. Please contact Melinda Baggenstos at

425.917.0720 or baggenstos@comcast.net with any questions.

Item 5: Sock Hop: The PTA sponsored 50’s Style Sock Hop will be held in Briarwood’s gym

from 6:45 pm until 8:30 pm this Friday, June 6. The 4th grade will be singing before the sock

hop at 6:30 pm in the multi-purpose room.

Item 6: Gift-A-Book Pizza Lunch: The Gift-A-Book pizza lunch will take place on

Wednesday, June 11 during all of our lunches. Mr. Terry and Ms. Soel will be serving pizza

and drinks to the students who donated books to Briarwood’s library.

Item 7: Children’s Hospital Foundation: Briarwood’s Student Council is collecting monetary

donations for the Children’s Hospital Foundation (diabetes clinic). The drive ends on Thursday,

June 12. Any contribution will be appreciated. If you have any questions or comments, please

contact Ms. Fry at frym@issaquah.wednet.edu or 425. 837.5042.

Item 8: 2007-2008 Yearbooks: Yearbooks that were preordered will be distributed on Friday,

June 13. Remaining yearbooks will be available at Briarwood’s Field Day on Monday, June 16

or by calling Ellen Tinseth at 425.271.8552 or randytinseth@msn.com. The cost for a yearbook

is $17.00.

Item 9: Field Day: Field Day is coming Monday, June 16! Field Day is a huge year-end event

for the students, sponsored by the Briarwood PTA. The students are challenged to travel

through a series of carnival-like events. Field Day takes place during the school day and cannot

happen without volunteers assisting teachers with the events. Volunteers meet in the gym by

1:00 pm and stay until the end of the school day (2:53 pm). Please e-mail or call Ann Clardy at

425.271.1491or anndclardy@comcast.net to volunteer or if you have questions.

Item 10: Fifth Grade Graduation: Fifth grade graduation is Tuesday, June 17 and will be a

day to remember for you and your fifth grader! Family and friends are invited to attend the

“Moving Up” ceremony at 10:30 am in the gym. The doors will open for seating at 10:00 am.

Students who have filled out and returned their permission slips to their teacher will be

transported by bus from Briarwood to Castle Ice at 12:50 pm for a PTA sponsored skating

party. There is no charge for the skating party; PTA has been generous, once again, and will

pay for the admittance to Castle Ice.

Parents need to pick up their child at Castle Ice by 3:00 pm; there will be no return buses to

Briarwood. If you have any questions call Melinda Baggenstos at 425.917.0720 or e-mail her at

baggenstos@comcast.net.

Item 11: Lost and Found: There are many coats, sweatshirts, shoes, lunch bags, and more

that have been left at school. Please check or have your student check the lost and found in the

multi-purpose room. Smaller lost items are kept in the office. Unclaimed items will be donated

to a charity on Friday, June 20.

Item 12: Medications: Orders for the administration of medication at school are good for one

academic year only. In addition, medications at school are not carried over to the next school

year and need to be returned to the parent. To avoid accidents we do not allow students to

hand carry their medication home, but request the parent to pick up the remaining medication at

the school office no later than Wednesday, June 25. If medications have not been picked up

by this date they will be destroyed.

Item 13: Office Hours: Briarwood’s office will be closed beginning Friday, June 27 and

reopen on Monday, August 11. Our office hours will be from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm and from

1:00 pm until 3:00 pm until school begins on Wednesday, September 3.

Item 14: Report Cards: Report cards will go home with your student on the last day of school

(Thursday, June 19) if…

• All of his/her library books have been returned to the library (the due date was last Friday,

May 30). If there are any unreturned or lost books a replacement fee will be charged.

Please call our librarian, Ms. Soel, at 425.837.5010 for more information.

• All of his/her lunch accounts are current by the end of the school year. Please call

425.837.5033 for more information.

• Any other damaged or lost school district items may also incur a fine.

If your child has an outstanding balance on library books, lunch accounts, and/or damaged or

lost items their report card will be held in the office until their accounts are rectified.

If your child is not present on the last day of school you will need to provide a selfaddressed,

stamped envelope for it to be mailed.

Item 15: Last Day of School: The last day of school for PM kindergarten is Tuesday, June

17; the last day of school for AM kindergarten is Wednesday, June 18; the last day of school

for full-day kindergarten and grades 1 through 5 is Thursday, June 19 at 11:00 am.

Item 16: New Dog Policy: The District has adopted a new policy regarding dogs on all

Issaquah School District campuses beginning September 1, 2008. Dogs will not be allowed on

campus unless they are directly providing service to any student, staff, or community member.

Item 17: Site Council Reps: As Briarwood begins planning for next year (2008-2009), we are

in need of Site Council reps. If you are interested in being a part of this important committee

please pick up an application and return it to the office before the end of the school year. We

meet once a month for about an hour.

Item 18: Are You Returning to Briarwood? If you have a child who is NOT returning to

Briarwood next fall, please inform the school office at 425.837.5000 immediately. An accurate

enrollment count is critical in determining how many classrooms at each grade level will be

needed and the assignment of teachers to these positions. Also, if you have a fifth grade

student who will NOT be attending Maywood Middle School please let them know at

425.837.6909.

Item 19: Extra PTA Directories: If you are a PTA member and would like an extra directory

there are a few available. Contact Gail at markandgailc@gmail.com or 425.255.1194.

Item 20: Family Access: Family Access gives parents and students online access to student

information, including attendance, class schedules, and immunization records. Parents can

also verify online that the emergency contact information and personal information on each

student is correct.

Upon completed registration and submittal of your e-mail address, you can set up your Family

Access by visiting the Issaquah School District website at www.issaquah.wednet.edu and

clicking on the Family Access link.

Note: On the Friday before Labor Day, if you have set up your Family Access account, you will

be able to log onto your account and find out your student’s teacher.

For questions about Family Access logins or to update your family’s phone number and physical

address, contact Briarwood’s registrar at 425.837.5000. If you have forgotten your password,

log in and ask that your password be sent to you.

Please make sure your e-mail address in Family Access is correct. Besides being used to email

your password if you forget, every fall e-mails are uploaded into school and District e-news

lists. E-mail addresses are used to contact parents in an emergency and used by teachers to

communicate and correspond with you regarding your student and class activities.

An easy way to login to Family Access is to go to Briarwood’s website at

http://www.briarwood.issaquah.wednet.edu/ and click on Family Access.
